Mining Industry Network of Excellence (MINE)
SkillsDMC has been contracted by the Tasmanian Government to bring its expertise in workforce development and management to the project and will support the industry network well into the future. SkillsDMC will conduct a skills audit of industry trainers and assessors and an industry code of practice for training providers will be developed.
The aim is to ensure that the people responsible for training in the mining industry have the appropriate skills and are acknowledgeable professionals. The mining industry will then identify the needs of existing employees to undertake skills training. The project recognises that maintaining a diversification of skills within the mining sector as critical to continued productivity in a challenging economic environment.
Project Update
SkillsDMC MINE Project commenced in September 2009. The key objectives of the project are to:
- Build capability and capacity for industry to take leadership and ownership of skill formation to achieve ongoing growth, success and sustainability.
- Increase RTO competition within the state for the mining sector
- Accredited training becomes cost neutral
In October MINE participants were asked to identify key staff within their organisation to participate in the creation of an industry specific professional network of Trainers and Assessors “Mining Industry Trainer and Assessor Network (MITAN) that will encompass leading practices in:
- Learning facilitation and assessment
- Learning management
- Learning technology
- Training program design and implementation; and
- Interpretation of the VET framework
To support this activity the following actions were taken:
- Skills audit of Industry Trainers and Assessors for the purposes of Certificate IV in Training and Assessment Code TAA40104
- Provision of TAA40104 as identified by skills audit
- Provision of Industry Trainers and Assessors professional development
The response to this has been overwhelming with over 20 participant’s enrolling in the sessions. Mr Mark Sayer General Manager of Skills Tasmania attended morning tea and informed participants of the significance of this project to the state and how it could contribute to possible changes to funding for training arrangements within the state.
