NSW ITAB
The SkillsDMC Resources and Infrastructure Industry ITAB (NSW)
SkillsDMC, as the Resources and Infrastructure Industry National Industry Skills Council, has an arrangement with NSW Department of Education and Communities (NSW DEC) to operate an Industry Training Advisory Body (ITAB) for the Resources and Infrastructure Industry NSW representing the coal mining, metalliferous mining, drilling, quarrying and civil infrastructure sectors.
The SkillsDMC Resources and Infrastructure Industry ITAB (NSW) is strongly committed to engaging industry to improve the capacity and capability of the workforce at regional, community and enterprise levels. SkillsDMC has established a number of networks comprising representatives of the five industry sectors across NSW which provide the basis for gathering information and feedback on workforce development matters and as an avenue to provide information. Invitations to meet with representatives from these areas are responded to and the relevant advice and support provided.
The SkillsDMC ITAB (NSW) facilitates an Advisory Committee representing enterprises, industry organisations, regulatory bodies, government agencies, unions, Australian Apprenticeships centres and RTOs from across NSW.
The advice provided by the ITAB assists NSW DEC to identify training priorities, formulate policy, implement reforms, design industry related strategies and to partner on industry skill initiatives. This work contributes to meeting training targets under the NSW State Plan and through Commonwealth/State agreements.
The ITAB plays a key role in:
- identifying and prioritising industry skills and workforce development training needs;
- working to maximise benefits to industry from the VET system and promoting industry participation in structured training;
- providing a range of strategic advice to Industry and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) with the aim of maximising the relevance and quality of training outcomes in the workplace;
- establishing apprenticeship and traineeship pathways and their suitability as schools-based arrangements;
- promoting and assisting in the implementation of brokerage services for funding training activities; and
- assisting in the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Resources and Infrastructure Industry (RII) Training Package.
Current Project
At present the SkillsDMC ITAB (NSW) is conducting a NSW Mining Statutory Positions Training Process Improvement Review.
NSW mining operations have expressed concern about the increasing demand for and shortage of qualified people able to perform Statutory Position roles in mining operations. A significant factor in this shortage is the low success rate of candidates undertaking the written and oral examinations required for the issuance of a Certificate of Competence for these roles.
The aim of the NSW Mining Statutory Positions Training Process Improvement Review Project is to provide evidence-based strategies for the selection, training and development of candidates for Statutory Positions. These strategies will be contained within Learning Best Practice Guides and resources for Employers, Candidates and RTOs.
The Project is being managed by SkillsDMC and is funded by contributions from the NSW DEC Skills Enhancement Program, Mine Safety Performance NSW Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure & Services, the NSW Minerals Council and SkillsDMC.
The aim of the NSW Statutory Positions project is to improve the success rate of candidates for Statutory Positions examinations in the NSW mining / extractive industry. Recommendations by the Project Steering Committe based on findings can be viewed in: NSW Mining Statutory Positions Training Process Improvement Review Project (Download PDF)
